Learning Center

Our Mission:
To provide easy access for teens and adults in the Over-the-Rhine area to develop the literacy and life skills necessary to reach their life goals in an environment sensitive to their complex life challenges.

Why we do what we do! 1 in 4 adults cannot perform the basic literacy requirements of a typical job. At least 50% of the unemployed, and 70% of those incarcerated, are functionally illiterate. 20% of Cincinnatians did not graduate from high school. The dropout rate in OTR is 45%.

A personal story!  At the age of 48, "P", as we like to call he, had never read a book in his life until he came through the “1212” door.  We tutored him in our program for two years.  Recently at his home, 6 nieces and nephews sat on the couch listening to him read a book—a “first” for him (but it won’t be the last!).

The Over-the-Rhine Learning Center is an adult literacy program carried out through First Lutheran Church.  We offer one-to-one reading tutoring, math tutoring, G.E.D. test prep, resume development and other job search support. The Computer Lab offers introductory computer assistance, access to the internet, e-mail, word processing, telephone and fax use.  Both are located in the building next door to the church (1212 Race Street) and are open every weekday.  Please stop in for a visit, or call 421-3265 for more information.

The Over-the-Rhine Learning Center is undergoing amazing growth in the support needed to keep up with the growth of our programs over the years. Thanks especially to our newly-received grant award from the Jacob G. Schmidlapp Trusts, Fifth Third Bank, Trustee, we hired staff to write grants, handle the steady traffic flow at the 1212 building, and to develop our GED test preparation program housed in the basement of the church building.
